The movie landed in trouble as a result of the lead actor Aamir Khan supporting the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA). The movie was banned from releasing in Gujarat by the theatre and multiplex owners for fear of violent protests given the threats of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

This controversial movie was termed as soft porn. The kissing scenes between Katrina Kaif and Gulshan Grover created quite a stir before being deleted for good.

This Deepa Mehta movie portrayed the difficult life of widows. The movie apparently hurt Hindu sentiments and posters of the movie were burnt.

This movie starring Shiney Ahuja was based on true events and showed a Catholic priest as having a romantic affair with a young woman. The issue, of course, was extremely sensitive and the movie was barely promoted on TV.
